St. Anne’s Lutheran Church

St. Anne’s Lutheran Church is one of Liepāja’s oldest and most atmospheric sacred buildings, with roots reaching back to the early 16th century. Originally a modest wooden church serving a growing Lutheran community, it was rebuilt in brick in the 1580s, making it one of the earliest Protestant churches in Latvia. Over the centuries, it has been expanded and reshaped, resulting in the harmonious blend of Gothic and Baroque elements seen today. One of the church’s most remarkable features is its richly carved Baroque altar from 1697, considered one of the finest in the Baltics. Rising dramatically with sculpted figures and gilded details, it reflects the craftsmanship of local masters during Liepāja’s prosperous merchant era. The church also houses a historic organ and several valuable artworks that survived fires, wars, and political upheavals. St. Anne’s has long been a centre of community life. During the 19th century, it played a key role in the city’s cultural development, hosting choirs and fostering education. Despite damage during World War II, careful restoration preserved its character.
