Liepāja Theatre

Liepāja Theatre is one of Latvia’s oldest professional stages and a cornerstone of the city’s cultural identity. Founded in 1907, it emerged during a period when Liepāja was a thriving port with a growing appetite for the arts. Its historic building on Teātra Street, with its elegant Art Nouveau and Eclecticist details, quickly became a symbol of the city’s creative spirit. An interesting chapter in its early history is the theatre’s multilingual repertoire. In the early 20th century, performances were staged in Latvian, German, and Russian, reflecting Liepāja’s diverse population. After World War II, it underwent major reconstruction, yet preserved much of its original charm, including the richly decorated auditorium known for its excellent acoustics.
