Liepājas muzejs

Liepājas Museum is one of Latvia’s oldest regional museums, founded in 1924 to preserve the cultural memory of this historic port city. Housed in a former merchant’s villa near the seaside, it offers a rich journey through Liepāja’s past, from ancient Couronian settlements to the city’s rise as a major Baltic naval hub. Its archaeological collection is especially notable, featuring artefacts from the Bronze Age and early medieval period that reveal the region’s long-standing maritime traditions. The museum is also known for its extensive ethnographic displays, showcasing traditional clothing, household items, and crafts from South Kurzeme. A highlight is the permanent exhibition dedicated to Liepāja’s 19th‑ and early 20th‑century urban life, where visitors can explore reconstructed interiors that capture the elegance of the city’s prosperous merchant class. Another distinctive feature is the museum’s focus on amber: Liepāja lies along the Amber Road, and its collection includes rare pieces illustrating the material’s cultural and economic importance. Today, Liepājas Museum serves as both a guardian of local heritage and a vibrant cultural centre, hosting temporary exhibitions, concerts, and educational programmes that connect the city’s past with its creative present.
