St. Joseph’s Cathedral is the principal Catholic church of Liepāja and one of the city’s most elegant sacred landmarks. Built between 1894 and 1904, it reflects the flourishing of the local Catholic community during a period of rapid urban growth. Its Neo‑Gothic design, marked by a tall spire, pointed arches, and richly detailed brickwork, gives the cathedral a distinctive presence in the cityscape. Inside, the cathedral is known for its warm, harmonious interior. The wooden altars, stained‑glass windows, and carefully crafted sculptures create an atmosphere of quiet devotion. One of the most interesting features is the main altar dedicated to St. Joseph, symbolising protection and steadfastness—qualities deeply valued by the community that built it. During the 20th century, the cathedral remained an important spiritual centre despite political upheavals, continuing to host services, choirs, and charitable work. St. Joseph’s Cathedral is the main Roman Catholic church of Liepāja, located in the city centre on Rakstvežu iela 13. It stands as one of the key religious buildings in the western Latvian region of Kurzeme, known for its solid brick‑clad façade and tall twin towers. The cathedral lies within easy walking distance of several central attractions. Close by you can visit Holy Trinity Cathedral, the Monument to the Fishermen and Sailors Lost at Sea, and the Liepāja Occupation Museum. From the cathedral you can also reach the main streets of the city centre, where shops, cafés, and the Latvian Musicians’ Alley of Fame are clustered. The Concert Hall “Great Amber” and the Seaside Park with the long Liepāja beach are only a short walk further, making St. Joseph’s Cathedral a convenient starting point for both city‑centre sightseeing and seaside walks.
