Klaipėda Castle, once the heart of the medieval port city, stands as a reminder of the Teutonic Order’s presence on the Baltic coast. Founded in the mid‑13th century, it was the only brick castle built by the Order in what is now Lithuania. Although much of the fortress was dismantled in the 19th century to expand the port, its surviving foundations and restored sections offer a fascinating look into Klaipėda’s early history. Inside the castle museum, visitors can explore atmospheric underground chambers where archaeological finds reveal how the fortress evolved over centuries. Exhibits display weapon fragments, ceramics, trade goods and everyday objects that once circulated through this strategic Baltic stronghold. One of the most interesting features is the model of medieval Klaipėda, showing how the castle shaped the city’s layout and defences. Interactive installations explain the Teutonic Order’s military structure, the region’s trade routes and the challenges of life in a frontier fortress. Seasonal exhibitions and guided tours add depth, bringing to life the stories of knights, merchants and townspeople who lived in the shadow of the castle.
Klaipėda Lithuania
Klaipėda Castle is located in the port city of Klaipėda, in western Lithuania, right by the Curonian Lagoon where the Danė River meets the sea. First built by the Teutonic Order in the 13th century, it was the northernmost castle in the Order’s territory and later developed into a strong bastion fortress. Today, the castle remains are part of the Castle Museum, set within the surviving earthen ramparts and underground tunnels. You can walk the bastions, see archaeological finds, and visit the restored Prince Frederick’s Tower. The site also includes a sculpture of a ghostly figure that has become a popular photo spot. The castle is right at the edge of Klaipėda’s Old Town. A short walk brings you to Theatre Square with the Ännchen von Tharau fountain and German-style fachwerk buildings. The Old Port area has the Meridianas, a historic sailing ship turned museum and restaurant, and the cruise ship terminal. From the nearby ferry terminal you can cross to Smiltynė on the Curonian Spit to visit the Lithuanian Sea Museum and Dolphinarium. The Amber Queen Museum, various sculpture parks, and the Clock Museum are also close by. In summer, the area comes alive with the Sea Festival, making the castle a great starting point for exploring Klaipėda’s maritime heritage.
