Panevėžys Church of St. Peter and St. Paul

About

The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Panevėžys is one of the city’s oldest and most atmospheric sacred buildings, reflecting the layered history of a parish that has shaped local life since the 18th century. The current Neo‑Gothic structure, completed in 1885, stands out with its tall spire, pointed arches and red‑brick façade—an architectural style rarely seen elsewhere in the region, giving the church a distinctive silhouette in the cityscape. Inside, the church offers a warm, intimate interior enriched by finely crafted wooden altars and expressive devotional sculptures. The main altar, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, features detailed carvings that highlight the apostles’ symbolic roles as protectors and teachers. Visitors will also notice the richly decorated side chapels, each containing paintings and liturgical objects that reflect the parish’s long spiritual traditions. One of the most interesting features is the church’s historic organ, used for concerts that fill the nave with resonant sound. Stained‑glass windows depicting biblical scenes cast colourful light across the interior, creating a serene atmosphere throughout the day. The churchyard, with its old trees and memorials, adds a peaceful frame to this enduring centre of Panevėžys’ religious life.
