Panevėžys Civic Art Gallery

About

The Panevėžys Civic Art Gallery is one of the city’s most dynamic cultural institutions, known for its bold contemporary exhibitions and its commitment to nurturing regional artistic talent. Established in 1993, the gallery quickly became a creative engine for Aukštaitija, hosting both Lithuanian and international artists whose work reflects current social, aesthetic and technological trends. Inside, visitors encounter a constantly changing programme: painting, sculpture, photography, video art and interdisciplinary installations that often transform the gallery’s minimalist spaces. One of the most distinctive features is the gallery’s long‑running ceramics tradition. Panevėžys is famous for its international ceramic symposiums, and many of the works created during these events are displayed here or in the nearby public sculpture park, forming one of the strongest contemporary ceramics collections in the Baltics. The gallery also preserves a valuable archive documenting the evolution of local art since the late Soviet period, offering insight into how Panevėžys artists shaped their own visual language during times of cultural transition. Educational workshops, artist talks and community projects make the gallery an active meeting point rather than a static exhibition space.

Location

The Panevėžys Civic Art Gallery is the largest art center in northern Lithuania, located in the heart of Panevėžys at Respublikos Street 3. Founded in 1990 under the city council, the gallery organizes over 30 exhibitions each year and operates across three departments, welcoming visitors with a diverse program of contemporary and traditional art. Nearby attractions are all within walking distance in the city center. Close to the gallery is the Stasys Eidrigevičius Museum, a modern building housing a unique collection of works by one of Lithuania’s most celebrated living artists, located just down the street at Respublikos Street 40. A short walk leads to Laisvės aikštė (Freedom Square), the city’s “singing square,” where the Brass Orchestra “Garsas” often plays live music and where craft workshops and art galleries are concentrated. The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Panevėžys’s main cathedral, is also nearby, along with the Senvagė scenic promenade along the old riverbed of the Nevėžis River, the city’s main place for walking and relaxation. The Key Tree sculpture, a popular symbol of Panevėžys, can be found in the vicinity.
