Palangos gintaro muziejus

About

Palanga’s Amber Museum, housed in the elegant 19th‑century Tiškevičiai Palace, is one of Lithuania’s most enchanting cultural sites. Surrounded by the vast Palanga Botanical Park, the museum immerses visitors in the world of Baltic amber—its geology, mythology and artistry—while preserving the aristocratic atmosphere of the historic residence. Inside, the museum displays more than 28,000 pieces of amber, including some of the world’s finest inclusions: insects, plants and tiny creatures perfectly preserved for up to 50 million years. The famed “Sun Stone,” a large, honey‑coloured specimen, is among the highlights. Exhibits explain how amber formed, how it was traded along the ancient Amber Road, and why it became a symbol of Baltic identity. The palace interiors add another layer of charm. Restored halls feature period furniture, decorative ceilings and sweeping views of the surrounding park. Visitors can explore rooms dedicated to amber jewellery, tools used by craftsmen and artistic works that show how the material has inspired creators for centuries.

Location

The Palanga Amber Museum (Palangos gintaro muziejus) is one of Lithuania’s most famous cultural attractions, located in the heart of Palanga, the country’s premier seaside resort town. It is housed in the restored 19th-century Tiškevičiai Palace (also known as Tyszkiewicz Palace) at Vytauto Street 17, within the beautiful Birutė Park and its botanical gardens, just a short walk from the Baltic Sea coast. The museum is surrounded by the Palanga Botanical Garden, a 100-hectare landscape park designed in 1897 by French landscape architect Eduard Francos Andre. The park features around 250 imported and 370 native plant species, ponds where visitors can take boat rides, a rose garden, a greenhouse, a rotunda, sculptures including the famous “Snake Queen,” and a Holocaust memorial. In summer, the park hosts concerts and festivals, including the renowned Serenade concerts that have been held every summer for over thirty years. Nearby attractions include Palanga’s white sandy beach and the iconic Palanga Pier, reached by walking down the lively J. Basanavičius Street, which is lined with cafés, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The pier is the perfect spot to watch the famous Baltic sunsets. Also close by are the fragrant pine forests and rolling dunes that surround the town, as well as the town’s parks, forests, and big sandy dunes for nature walks and sunbathing.
