Church of St. Mary Magdalene Liberec

About

The F. X. Šalda Theatre is the cultural heart of Liberec, a historic stage that has shaped the city’s artistic identity for more than a century. Opened in 1883 and rebuilt after a devastating fire, it blends neo‑Renaissance elegance with the intimacy of a traditional European playhouse. Inside, visitors are greeted by a richly decorated auditorium with gilded ornamentation, a grand chandelier, and excellent acoustics that enhance both drama and opera. One of the theatre’s most interesting aspects is its three‑ensemble structure—drama, opera, and ballet—making it one of the few regional theatres in the Czech Republic to maintain such artistic breadth. Backstage tours reveal original stage machinery, costume workshops, and the complex technical world hidden behind the curtain. The theatre’s programming often highlights Czech classics alongside contemporary works, offering a dynamic mix that reflects Liberec’s vibrant cultural life.

Location

The F. X. Šalda Theatre is located in the very centre of Liberec, on Zhorelecká Street 5, close to the main Town Hall Square. The theatre stands near the historic city centre, just a short walk from the main square, shops, and cafés, making it easy to combine with other sights. One of the oldest theatres in the Czech Republic, the F. X. Šalda Theatre dates back to 1883 and was originally known as the City Theatre. It was built in elegant Neo-Renaissance style with an ornate façade and decorated interiors. Since 1957 it has been named after the Czech writer and critic František Xaver Šalda. Today it houses three professional ensembles – drama, opera, and ballet – and performs on the main stage and on the smaller stage of the Small Theatre. Nearby attractions include the striking Liberec Town Hall on the Gothic-style Town Hall Square, the nearby Liberec Castle, and the beautiful Valdštejn (Wallenstein) Houses, a group of historic half-timbered houses. Just a short walk away are the North Bohemian Museum and the Regional Gallery, as well as the interactive IQ Park science centre. For a fuller day out, you can visit the famous Liberec Zoo and Botanical Garden, or take a tram up to Ještěd Mountain and its iconic hotel and TV transmitter with panoramic views over the region.
