Zoo Liberec

About

Zoo Liberec is the oldest zoo in the Czech Republic and one of the most distinctive, thanks to its blend of historic charm and modern conservation work. Its most famous residents are the white tigers, a symbol of the zoo since the 1980s and a major draw for visitors. The grounds are arranged along a wooded valley, creating a natural, peaceful atmosphere where enclosures blend into the landscape. Inside, guests can explore themed pavilions such as the Elephant House, the tropical pavilion with free‑flying birds, and the impressive collection of big cats, primates, and rare ungulates. One of the most interesting features is the zoo’s long‑term involvement in international breeding programmes, especially for endangered species like the Przewalski’s horse and various cranes. Educational exhibits throughout the park highlight global biodiversity and the challenges facing wildlife today. Zoo Liberec offers a full‑day experience where nature, science, and history come together.

Location

Zoo Liberec is located at Masarykova 1347/31 (also known as Lidové sady 425/1) in the Liberec 1 district, close to the city centre and reachable by tram to the terminal stop Zoo–Lidové sady. Founded in 1904, it is the oldest zoo in the Czech Republic and was established on the grounds of a circus’s former winter quarters. The zoo covers 14 hectares and houses up to 160 species from all continents, including elephants, pumas, chimpanzees, and birds of prey in one of Europe’s biggest breeding programmes. It is most famous for being the only place in the Czech Republic where you can see white tigers. The walking route through the zoo is about 1.8 km long, and visitors are recommended to allow at least 2–3 hours, though a full day is possible. P parking is available right by the entrance or at a second car park 500 metres away on Fibichova Street. Right next to the zoo is the beautiful Liberec Botanical Garden, which showcases exceptional orchids and other plant collections, making it ideal to visit both in one trip. Nearby attractions include iQLANDIA, the large interactive science centre with a planetarium and over 400 exhibits, and the Liberec Town Hall, a striking Gothic-style building on the main square that resembles a cathedral.
