North Bohemian Museum

About

The North Bohemian Museum in Liberec is the oldest public museum in the region, founded in 1873 to celebrate the area’s rich artistic and industrial heritage. Its striking Neo‑Renaissance building is an attraction in itself, crowned with a distinctive tower that has become one of Liberec’s architectural symbols. One of the most interesting facts is that the museum originally focused on textiles, reflecting Liberec’s status as a major centre of the Austro‑Hungarian textile industry. Inside, visitors encounter a wide‑ranging collection that blends art, history, and natural sciences. The decorative arts galleries showcase exquisite glass, porcelain, jewellery, and textiles, including pieces from renowned North Bohemian glassworks. Historical exhibitions trace the development of the region through maps, weapons, and everyday objects, while the natural history section presents minerals, fossils, and zoological specimens. A highlight is the detailed model of historic Liberec, offering a rare glimpse into the city’s past urban landscape. The museum’s mix of craftsmanship, regional identity, and scientific curiosity makes it one of Liberec’s most rewarding cultural institutions.
