The Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross in Liberec is a quiet architectural gem that reveals layers of local history. Originally built in the 17th century as part of a Capuchin monastery, it later became a key spiritual landmark for the growing town. Its exterior is modest, but the interior surprises with warm Baroque atmosphere, soft light, and carefully preserved devotional art. One of the most interesting features is the main altar, dedicated to the discovery of the True Cross, which reflects the church’s unique dedication. Visitors can also admire side chapels with statues of saints venerated by the Capuchins, as well as period paintings that survived turbulent centuries. The former monastery spaces nearby hint at the building’s monastic past, adding depth to the visit. Today the church offers a peaceful retreat from the city centre, inviting reflection and appreciation of Liberec’s early religious heritage.
Liberec Czech Republic
The Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross is located on Malé náměstí (Small Square) 2, near Valdštejnská Street, in the Staré Město district of central Liberec, Czech Republic. It is a Baroque church built between 1714 and 1725 by the Italian builder Giovanni Battista Alliprandi, with completion later taken over by František Maxmilián Kaňka. The church is a cultural heritage site of the Czech Republic and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Litoměřice. It burned down four times in its history and was closed after 1968, gradually falling into disrepair, but between 2011 and 2015 it underwent a complete reconstruction that brought it back to life. Today it houses the exhibition “Angels on the Hill,” serves as a space for religious art and cultural events, and offers a viewpoint between the towers on its façade (for a small fee) with views over the city. Entry to the temple space is free during opening hours, and there is also an interactive children’s programme called “Up to the Angels”. The church is situated in the historic heart of Liberec, very close to the city’s main attractions. Just a few steps away are the Valdštejn (Wallenstein) Houses, a set of beautiful 17th-century half-timbered houses, and the imposing Liberec Town Hall on the main square. Nearby you can also visit the Liberec Chateau, the North Bohemian Museum, and the Regional Gallery.
