Church of St. Jacob

Church of St. Jacob is one of Telč’s defining landmarks, rising just behind the famous Renaissance square and forming a harmonious trio with the chateau and townhouses. Its origins date to the 14th century, and although later rebuilt, the church still preserves Gothic foundations. One of its most interesting features is the tall, slender tower, which long served as a lookout point for fires threatening the wooden‑roofed town. Inside, the church offers a calm, spacious nave with clean Gothic lines. The main altar, dedicated to St. Jacob the Elder, is richly carved and framed by statues of apostles. Several side altars display Baroque paintings linked to local devotional traditions. Visitors can also admire the beautifully restored organ, whose warm sound fills the church during concerts. The tower, accessible on guided visits, rewards those who climb it with a striking view over Telč’s rooftops and ponds. St. Jacob’s Church remains a quiet anchor of the town’s spiritual and architectural identity.

Church of St. James the Elder in Telč is located on the edge of the historic centre, directly by Náměstí Zachariáše z Hradce, the main square of the town.
