Kostel Matky Boží

Kostel Matky Boží in Telč is a peaceful Gothic church with roots in the 14th century, standing just outside the historic centre near the former town fortifications. Its simple exterior, marked by a tall, narrow tower and clean stone lines, reflects the modest character of early parish architecture. One interesting fact is that the church once belonged to a small hospital complex run by the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star, who cared for travellers and the poor. Inside, the church offers a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. The main altar features a graceful Baroque statue of the Virgin Mary, framed by soft light entering through slender Gothic windows. Visitors can also see fragments of medieval wall paintings and several wooden sculptures that survived later renovations. The vaulted ceiling, though modest, adds to the church’s serene charm. Kostel Matky Boží remains a gentle reminder of Telč’s spiritual life before the Renaissance era transformed the town.
