One interesting fact is that the garden originally served both decorative and practical purposes, combining ornamental spaces with areas for herbs and fruit trees used in the castle kitchens. Inside the garden, visitors find a calm, structured landscape framed by old walls and shaded paths. The Castle Garden lies in Telč, a picturesque UNESCO World Heritage town in the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic. You will find it directly behind the Telč State Castle, on the northwestern edge of the historic center. The garden stretches between the Renaissance château and the calm waters of Ulický Pond, enclosed by remnants of the old town fortifications. Established in the 16th century as a private Renaissance garden for the aristocratic owners of the castle, it was later redesigned with Baroque features. Today it is a public park where geometric flower beds, neatly trimmed hedges, and centuries-old trees create a peaceful setting. A covered arcade gallery runs along one side, offering framed views of the castle façades and the pond. Entry is free, making it a perfect place to rest after touring the château interiors. Stepping out of the garden brings you immediately to Telč State Castle, whose lavish halls, chapel, and English-style park are open to visitors. Just beyond the castle courtyard is Zacharias of Hradec Square, the town’s famous main square lined with pastel Renaissance and Baroque houses with arcades. The square’s charm makes it one of the most photographed places in the country. A short walk along the square leads to the Church of St. James, where you can climb the tower for panoramic views of Telč’s red rooftops, ponds, and green countryside. The path along Ulický Pond follows the old town walls and circles back toward the garden, offering quiet waterside scenery. Nearby you can also visit the House of Telč, a small museum in a historic home that shares local legends and the story of the town.
