Telč Castle is the crown jewel of the town’s UNESCO heritage, a Renaissance residence that feels more like an Italian palace than a Czech fortress. Rebuilt in the 16th century by Zachariáš of Hradec, it transformed a medieval stronghold into a refined aristocratic home inspired by Venetian architecture. One fascinating detail is the preserved sgraffito decoration, created by Italian craftsmen who brought southern artistic flair to the heart of Moravia. Inside, visitors can explore richly furnished chambers that reveal the lifestyle of the noble Hradec and Podstatský families. The Knight’s Hall, with its carved wooden ceiling and heraldic motifs, is one of the highlights. The Golden Hall impresses with intricate coffered ceilings, while the private apartments display period furniture, portraits, and delicate ceramics. The castle chapel, dedicated to St. George, preserves beautiful frescoes and a serene atmosphere. The arcaded courtyard and adjoining garden complete the experience, offering a peaceful Renaissance setting.

Telč Castle is located in the heart of Telč, on Náměstí Zachariáše z Hradce, at the western edge of the historic square. It is one of the town’s main landmarks and a fine example of Renaissance architecture, built on the site of an older Gothic castle. The castle is easy to include in a walk through Telč’s UNESCO-listed historic centre. Just outside the gate, you will find the famous square with its colorful burgher houses, arcades, and richly decorated façades, which are among the most photographed sights in Czechia. Nearby, the Church of St. James the Elder offers a strong skyline view and another important historic stop. You can also visit Telčský dům, the House of Telč, and the small-town museum attractions around the square. For a more relaxed part of the visit, the chateau garden and the pond-lined paths around the centre are ideal for a quiet walk.
