About

The Csokonai Theater in Debrecen is one of Hungary’s oldest and most atmospheric theatres, named after the poet Mihály Csokonai Vitéz, whose spirit of creativity still resonates through the building. Completed in 1865, it stands out with its richly decorated façade, blending Romantic and Neo‑Baroque elements, and featuring statues of muses and playwrights that hint at the artistic world inside. The interior is a true jewel. The auditorium, with its red‑and‑gold colour scheme, ornate boxes and crystal chandeliers, evokes the elegance of 19th‑century theatre culture. Visitors can admire the ceiling frescoes, which add a sense of depth and drama to the space, as well as the finely carved wooden details that frame the stage. The theatre is known for its excellent acoustics, making it a beloved venue for opera, drama and ballet. One of the most interesting aspects is the theatre’s long tradition of nurturing Hungarian performers and hosting premieres of national works. Its intimate yet grand atmosphere makes every performance feel like a step back into the golden age of European theatre.
