Medgyessy Ferenc Memorial Museum

About

The Medgyessy Ferenc Memorial Museum in Debrecen celebrates one of Hungary’s most expressive 20th‑century sculptors, known for his powerful yet deeply human portrayals of everyday people. Housed in a refined historic villa, the museum offers an intimate setting that allows visitors to experience Medgyessy’s work up close, revealing the subtle textures and emotional depth that define his style. Inside, the core attraction is the collection of bronze and stone sculptures, many of them life‑sized or larger, capturing workers, mothers, athletes and mythological figures with a characteristic blend of strength and tenderness. The museum also displays plaster models, which provide insight into Medgyessy’s creative process, showing how his monumental public works evolved from initial sketches to final forms. Complementing the sculptures are drawings, personal objects and archival materials that illuminate his artistic journey and his connection to Debrecen.

Just a short walk away are the Déri Museum (with its famous Munkácsy paintings) and the Debrecen House of Literature, which share the same building complex at Péterfia u. 28.
