The Small Reformed Church in Debrecen, affectionately known as the Kistemplom, is one of the city’s most recognisable symbols thanks to its distinctive “csonka torony”—the truncated tower that gives the church its nickname. Built in the early 17th century, it stands as one of Debrecen’s oldest surviving Reformed buildings, reflecting the simplicity and clarity of Calvinist architecture. Fires and storms repeatedly damaged the tower, and its unfinished form became a beloved local curiosity rather than a flaw. Inside, the church offers a serene, intimate atmosphere. The wooden gallery, supported by simple pillars, evokes the modest character of early Protestant worship spaces. The pulpit, crafted in clean geometric lines, is the visual and spiritual focal point, emphasising the importance of preaching in Reformed tradition. Visitors can also see historical furnishings and memorial plaques that trace the congregation’s long presence in the city.

The Small Reformed Church in Debrecen (also called the Reformed Small Church or locally the “Truncated Church”) is the oldest surviving church building in Debrecen, located at Révész tér 2 in the city center, halfway up Piac Street between colorful historic trading houses and palaces. Originally built in the 17th century in Baroque style and later renovated in Neo‑Romanesque style in 1876, its bell tower still rings over Városháza Street, and it is known for its modest size and a bizarrely modern clock face on its facade. The church is in the heart of Debrecen, very close to the main square and key attractions. Just a short walk away is Kossuth Square with the Reformed Great Church, the city’s most iconic landmark and Hungary’s largest Protestant church. Nearby are the main shopping and café streets, including Piac utca and Simonffy sétáló utca, the Csokonai National Theatre, and Saint Anne’s Cathedral, the seat of the Diocese of Debrecen-Nyíregyháza. The Déri Museum, home to Mihály Munkácsy’s “Christ Trilogy” paintings, the Debrecen Reformed College, and the Museum of the Reformed College are also minutes away. A bit further north, in Nagyerdei Park, you can visit the Aquaticum thermal spa, the Debrecen Zoo and Amusement Park, the water tower adventure center, and Nagyerdei Stadium, all easily reachable by tram or on foot.
