The Botanical Garden of the University of Debrecen’s Faculty of Science is a peaceful, academically rich enclave where research and quiet beauty meet. Founded in the early 20th century, it has grown into one of eastern Hungary’s most diverse plant collections, shaped by decades of scientific work and careful cultivation. Its location beside the university campus gives it a unique atmosphere: part garden, part open‑air laboratory. Inside, visitors can explore the arboretum, home to towering conifers, rare deciduous trees and shaded paths that feel far removed from the city. The greenhouses are among the garden’s most fascinating features, housing tropical and subtropical species, including orchids, palms and carnivorous plants. Seasonal displays highlight alpine flora, medicinal herbs and protected Hungarian species, offering insight into the region’s botanical heritage. One particularly interesting aspect is the garden’s role in conservation and education. Many plants are part of ongoing research projects, and labelled specimens help visitors understand ecological relationships and biodiversity. It’s a calm, thoughtful space where science and nature blend seamlessly.
