Szechenyi Square

About

Szechenyi Square is the green heart of Szeged, a spacious 19th‑century park framed by grand palaces that reflect the city’s post‑flood rebuilding. Named after István Széchenyi, the “Greatest Hungarian,” it blends civic pride with relaxed urban life, making it one of the most atmospheric public spaces in the city. The square is lined with impressive historic buildings, including the City Hall and several ornate residential palaces decorated with Art Nouveau and eclectic details. Its wide lawns, old plane trees, and carefully arranged flowerbeds create a calm oasis in the city centre. Statues of national figures—such as Lajos Kossuth and Ferenc Deák—add a layer of historical storytelling to the landscape. Inside the square’s park area, visitors can enjoy shaded paths, benches, and seasonal displays that make it a favourite meeting spot for locals. An interesting fact is that the square once hosted major fairs and public gatherings, and its layout still reflects the grand urban vision that reshaped Szeged after the 1879 flood.
