Szeged Cathedral

About

Szeged Cathedral, also known as the Votive Church, is the city’s defining landmark, built after the devastating 1879 flood as a symbol of renewal. Completed in 1930, it blends Romanesque and Byzantine influences, crowned by twin 91‑metre towers that dominate Dóm Square. Its vast interior can hold up to 5,000 people, making it one of Hungary’s largest churches. Inside, visitors are greeted by richly coloured frescoes created by leading Hungarian artists of the early 20th century. The most striking is the Madonna of Szeged, depicted as a modern Hungarian woman—a bold artistic choice at the time. The crypt, designed in a solemn Romanesque style, holds memorials to bishops and civic leaders who shaped the city’s rebirth. One of the cathedral’s most fascinating features is its famous organ, among the largest in the country, with over 9,000 pipes. Concerts held here fill the space with a resonant, cathedral‑shaking sound. Don’t miss the Dömötör Tower next door, Szeged’s oldest building, where medieval fresco fragments reveal the city’s deep past.
