The Castle Museum in Szeged occupies the last surviving fragment of the city’s medieval fortress, a structure once guarding the banks of the Tisza. Most of the original castle was demolished in the 19th century, making this preserved wing a rare architectural witness to Szeged’s early history. Its thick walls and vaulted interiors still carry the atmosphere of a frontier stronghold. Inside, the museum presents exhibitions that trace the city’s past from the Middle Ages to modern times. Visitors can explore artefacts uncovered during local excavations, including weapons, tools, and everyday objects that reveal how life unfolded around the former fortress. A particularly engaging section focuses on the 1879 flood, showing how the disaster reshaped Szeged and led to its grand reconstruction. The museum also hosts temporary displays, often centred on archaeology, urban history, or regional crafts. Walking through its rooms offers a sense of stepping back into a more rugged era, where the castle stood as both a defensive post and a symbol of authority.
