Reök Palace

About

Reök Palace is Szeged’s most striking example of Hungarian Art Nouveau, designed in 1907 by Ede Magyar, often called the “Hungarian Gaudí.” Its flowing lines, floral motifs, and sculpted balconies make it one of the city’s most photographed landmarks. The building was commissioned by Iván Reök, a wealthy water‑engineer, and its façade subtly references the movement of water through its wave‑like curves. Inside, the palace functions as a vibrant cultural centre. Visitors can explore bright, airy exhibition halls that host contemporary art shows, photography, and thematic displays. The interior preserves elegant original details—ornamental ironwork, stained glass, and softly rounded doorways that echo the organic shapes of the exterior. An interesting fact: Ede Magyar died young, leaving behind only a handful of buildings, which makes Reök Palace especially significant as one of his masterpieces. Its central staircase, framed by sculptural forms and natural light, is a highlight for architecture lovers.
