Petofi Theater

About

Petőfi Theater is one of Sopron’s cultural cornerstones, a venue where the city’s long theatrical tradition meets elegant 19th‑century architecture. Originally built in the age of civic prosperity, the theatre has been rebuilt and modernised several times, yet it still preserves the charm of a classic Central European playhouse. Its façade reflects historicist design, while the interior blends period ornamentation with contemporary technical upgrades. Inside, visitors can admire the richly decorated auditorium with its horseshoe layout, gilded details, and warm red‑and‑gold colour scheme that creates an intimate atmosphere. The ceiling paintings and decorative stuccoes recall the theatre’s early decades, when operettas, dramas, and travelling troupes filled the stage. Today, the theatre hosts a wide repertoire—from Hungarian classics to modern productions—supported by excellent acoustics and a versatile stage. One of the most interesting features is the backstage exhibition area, where costumes, set models, and archival photographs reveal how Sopron’s theatrical life evolved over more than a century. Petőfi Theater remains a vibrant cultural hub, offering both historical depth and lively contemporary performance.
