Saint George Church

About

Saint George Church is one of Sopron’s lesser‑known but historically rich sanctuaries, standing just off the old town’s medieval streets. Its origins date to the 14th century, when local guilds and citizens dedicated the church to Saint George, the city’s traditional protector. The exterior is modest, yet the building carries layers of Gothic and later Baroque transformations that mirror Sopron’s turbulent past, including the great fire of 1676. Inside, visitors find a warm, intimate nave with ribbed Gothic vaults and finely carved stone details. The Baroque main altar, dedicated to Saint George, features dynamic sculptural work depicting the saint’s legendary battle with the dragon. Side altars display devotional paintings and statues created by local craftsmen, offering insight into Sopron’s artistic traditions. One of the most interesting features is the preserved medieval sacristy door, with ironwork that still bears marks of centuries of use. The church’s quiet atmosphere and layered architecture make it a rewarding stop for those exploring Sopron’s spiritual heritage.

Saint George Church, also known as Szent György-templom, is located in the heart of Sopron’s town center on Szent György Street, hidden between houses and barely noticeable from the street except for its tower, which can only be seen from the Castle District. The church was originally built in Gothic style in the 14th–15th centuries and later expanded in the 17th century, featuring Baroque architecture and an eclectic tower built in 1882. It is a historic Roman Catholic monument with a cemetery on its grounds, where the walls and ceilings are covered with intricate frescoes. Nearby attractions include the Main Square with the iconic Fire Tower, the Goat Church, and the Old Benedictine monastery. The Storno House, a beautiful Baroque palace on Main Square, and the Fabricius House, part of the Museum Quarter, are just a short walk away. You can also visit the Lutheran Church, the Synagogues on Új utca, and the Széchenyi Square with its palaces. The Central Mining Museum and Forestry Museum on Templom Street, as well as the Scarbantia Fórum exhibition under the Tourinform office, are also easily accessible, making Saint George Church a convenient stop on a cultural walking tour of Sopron’s historic center.
