Fire Tower is Sopron’s unmistakable symbol, rising above the Old Town where Roman, medieval, and Baroque layers meet. Built on the foundations of Scarbantia’s ancient gate tower, it served for centuries as the city’s early‑warning system: guards stationed at the top watched for fires, approaching enemies, or travellers on the Amber Road. Its distinctive onion‑shaped dome was added after the great fire of 1676, giving the tower its iconic silhouette. Inside, a spiral staircase leads through thick stone walls to several small exhibition spaces showing historic firefighting tools, city seals, and artefacts linked to Sopron’s civic life. As you climb, you can see the tower’s structural evolution—from Roman masonry to later fortification elements. The highlight is the panoramic balcony, offering one of the finest views in western Hungary: red‑tiled roofs, church towers, and the distant Sopron Hills. The Fire Tower is not just a lookout but a living monument to the city’s resilience and continuity.
Sopron Hungary
The Fire Tower, called Tűztorony in Hungarian, is the iconic landmark of Sopron, located at Fő tér 5–6 on the city’s Main Square. It rises 60 meters above the square and is one of the most visible symbols of the town, built on Roman foundations with a medieval cylindrical section, a Renaissance balcony and clock tower, and a Baroque spire. Visitors can climb the tower’s spiral staircase to reach the circular balcony, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of Sopron’s old town and into Austria. The visit typically takes 30–60 minutes, and the tower is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.. Nearby attractions include the Storno House, a beautiful Baroque corner palace on the Main Square that houses a valuable private collection. The Fabricius House, part of the Museum Quarter along with Storno House and the General’s House, is just steps away. The Goat Church (Szentgyörgytemplom), the Holy Trinity Statue, and the Main Square itself are all in the immediate vicinity. You can also visit the Lenck Villa at Deák tér, the Central Mining Museum, the Forestry Museum, and the Scarbantia Fórum exhibition, all within a short walk from the Fire Tower.
