Saint Michael Church

About

Saint Michael Church is one of Sopron’s oldest and most atmospheric landmarks, standing on a rise that once marked the medieval city’s northern edge. Its origins reach back to the 13th century, and the church long served as the burial place for Sopron’s citizens, giving it a deep connection to local memory. The Gothic exterior, with its tall spire and pointed arches, reflects the city’s prosperity during the Middle Ages. Inside, visitors will find a serene, high‑vaulted nave supported by slender Gothic pillars. The main altar features refined Baroque sculpture, added after the great fire of 1676, blending elegantly with the earlier medieval structure. One of the most interesting sights is the 14th‑century stone pulpit, decorated with delicate tracery and symbolic carvings. The side chapels contain historic altarpieces, devotional statues, and fragments of medieval frescoes that hint at the church’s original appearance. The crypt area and preserved tombstones offer a glimpse into centuries of Sopron’s civic life. Saint Michael Church remains a quiet, contemplative space where the city’s layered history is still palpable.

Location

Saint Michael Church, also known as Szent Mihály-templom, is the oldest parish church in Sopron. It stands on St. Michael’s Hill (Szent Mihály-domb) in the city’s historical center, along an important thoroughfare in the Szentmihálydomb district. The church was founded before the Mongol invasion in the 13th century and was first mentioned in writing in 1278. Originally built in Romanesque style, the church was rebuilt in Gothic style in the 15th century and completed in its current size by 1484, possibly with King Matthias attending its consecration. Following the 1728 Sopron fire, it received Baroque renovations, but was later transformed into neo-Gothic style. It is considered one of the most outstanding buildings of Hungarian Gothic architecture due to its size and style, and features impressive gargoyles. Nearby attractions include the Taródi Castle (Owl Castle) and the Sörházdombi Lookout Tower, both within a short walk in the Lővér Hills area. You can also visit the Lőver Alpine Park adventure playground and the Botanical Garden nearby. The historic city center with the Fire Tower, Main Square, Storno House, and the Goat Church is easily accessible, making Saint Michael Church a perfect starting point for exploring Sopron’s cultural and natural heritage.
