Taródi Vár, Sopron’s eccentric “fairy‑tale castle,” is one of Hungary’s most unusual private architectural creations. Built almost entirely by hand by local teacher István Taródi from the 1950s onward, the castle is a lifelong passion project rather than a historical fortress. Taródi quarried stone himself, designed every tower and wall, and incorporated medieval‑inspired elements such as drawbridges, battlements, and winding staircases. The result is a romantic, slightly surreal structure that feels both ancient and dreamlike. Inside, visitors can explore courtyards, lookout towers, and rooms filled with objects collected by Taródi, including armour, folk items, and curiosities that reflect his fascination with history. The castle’s stone corridors and narrow passages create a playful sense of discovery, while the elevated walkways offer sweeping views over Sopron’s green hills. One of the most interesting features is the artificial moat and pond system, also built by Taródi, which adds to the medieval atmosphere. Taródi Vár stands as a testament to individual creativity and determination, making it one of Sopron’s most memorable and personal landmarks.

Taródi vár, also known as Taródi Castle or Owl Castle, is located at Csalogány köz 36 in the Felsőlőverek district of Sopron, Hungary, on Nándor Heights (Nándor magaslat). This unique 4,000-square-meter stone castle was built by István Taródi and his family starting in 1953, using stones and bricks from around 150–200 railway cars. The castle is a remarkable handcrafted fortress blending medieval and fantasy architecture, featuring towers, courtyards, and detailed stonework that visitors can explore. It sits on higher ground, offering pleasant views of the surrounding area, and is easily accessible by foot or car with free parking nearby. Nearby attractions include the Kőhalmy Hunting Museum (Forest Pub) and the Károly Lookout Tower within the Park Forest, as well as the Lover Adventure Park with its barefoot forest path and adventure playground. You can also visit the Sopron Botanical Garden, the Pauline-Carmelite Monastery with the Queen of Heaven Church in Sopronbánfalva, and the Sörházdombi-kilátó scenic overlook. The Main Square, Goat Church, and the Central Mining Museum in the city center are also within easy reach, making Taródi vár a great stop for combining castle exploration with Sopron’s historic sights.
