Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana (MASI) is Lugano’s flagship art institution, a modern museum that bridges Swiss heritage with international contemporary creativity. Formed by merging the city’s major collections, it occupies two complementary spaces: the lakeside LAC building and the historic Palazzo Reali. Together they offer one of Switzerland’s most diverse art experiences. The Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana, known as MASI, is Lugano’s principal museum of modern and contemporary art. It has two linked sites in the city centre: the main venue in the LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura complex on Piazza Bernardino Luini, and a historic branch in Palazzo Reali on Via Canova, the former home of the cantonal art museum. The LAC building stands on a central square just behind the lakeside promenade, within walking distance of the main railway station and the old town. From the museum, a brief stroll leads to the lakefront with its tree‑lined quays, parks and views across Lake Lugano. The narrow streets of the old town, with their shops, cafés and the 16th‑century cathedral of San Lorenzo, lie just uphill. A walk along the shore brings visitors to the Parco Ciani, a lakeside park with subtropical plants, and to the funival connecting to the hillside quarters of Città Alta. Boat trips on the lake provide easy access to lakeside villages such as Gandria and Morcote, while local buses and trains reach the surrounding Ticino valleys and the Italian border. MASI thus sits at the cultural and geographical heart of Lugano, combining art with the city’s scenic lake and mountain environment.
