Parco Ciani is Lugano’s green heart, a lakeside park where centuries of careful design meet the city’s relaxed elegance. Once part of a private estate, it became a public garden in the early 20th century and still preserves its aristocratic layout: winding paths, sculpted flowerbeds, and long perspectives that frame the lake like a stage. The entrance through the Villa Ciani sets the tone, with its pastel façade and quiet courtyards hinting at the park’s refined origins. Inside, visitors find a surprising variety of micro‑landscapes. The lakeside promenade is the most iconic, lined with ancient plane trees whose roots have witnessed generations of Lugano’s history. The botanical section is another highlight, featuring exotic species introduced during the Belle Époque, including rare magnolias and cedar trees. Parco Ciani is Lugano’s largest and most beloved lakeside park, located right on the shore of Lake Lugano in the city center. It stretches along Riva Antonio Caccia, just a 5-minute walk east of Piazza della Riforma and the main shopping streets. With 63,000 square meters of gardens, it connects the city to the water. The park blends Italian-style formal gardens with English landscape design. You’ll find centuries-old trees, flowerbeds, sculptures, fountains, and shaded paths along the lake. Inside the park stands Villa Ciani, a 19th-century villa housing part of the Museum of Cultures, with exhibits on art and ethnography. From Parco Ciani, Lugano’s highlights are all walkable. Exit west to reach Piazza della Riforma, the bustling main square with cafés and arcades. The LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura, the city’s major arts and performance center, is 7 minutes along the lakefront promenade. The old town and Via Nassa, Lugano’s luxury shopping street, begin just north of the park. For panoramic views, the funicular to Monte San Salvatore departs from Piazza Cioccaro, 10 minutes away. The Cathedral of San Lorenzo sits uphill, offering a terrace over the city.
