Parco San Grato is one of Lugano’s most enchanting escapes, a hilltop garden suspended between forest and sky. Located above Carona, it is famous for its extraordinary collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, and conifers—one of the richest in Switzerland. The park’s origins trace back to mid‑20th‑century botanical experiments, when horticulturists discovered that the altitude and microclimate created ideal conditions for rare species. Today, its flowering season transforms the slopes into a vivid tapestry of colours. Inside the park, visitors follow themed paths that reveal different moods: the panoramic trail opens onto sweeping views of Lake Lugano and Monte San Salvatore, while the botanical route leads through shaded groves and curated plant zones. One of the most interesting features is the lookout tower, a modest structure offering one of the region’s most cinematic vistas. Sculptures, wooden bridges, and quiet benches create a rhythm of discovery, making the park feel both natural and subtly designed.

Parco San Grato is a botanical park set in the hills above Carona, a historic village just outside Lugano, Switzerland. It sits on the slopes of Monte San Salvatore, about 15 minutes by car from Lugano’s city center. At 690 meters above sea level, the park overlooks Lake Lugano and the surrounding Alps. Known for its plant collections, Parco San Grato features the largest displays of azaleas, rhododendrons, and conifers in the region. Five themed trails wind through 62,000 square meters of gardens, forests, and meadows, with viewpoints, rest areas, and a children’s playground. Peak bloom is late April to May. From the park, walk 10 minutes to Carona, a charming medieval village with stone houses, narrow alleys, and the Church of San Giorgio. The village is known for art galleries and traditional grotti restaurants serving Ticino cuisine. Monte San Salvatore is right next door — you can hike up or connect to its funicular route for panoramic views over Lugano and the lake. The lakeside town of Morcote, voted one of Switzerland’s most beautiful villages, is 10 minutes by car, with its arcaded waterfront and Santa Maria del Sasso church.
