Museum of Cultures Lugano is one of the city’s most distinctive institutions, housed in the elegant Villa Heleneum on the lakeshore. Dedicated to exploring how societies express identity through objects, rituals and art, it offers a journey across continents without leaving Ticino. Its collection was shaped by travelers, scholars and collectors who brought back pieces revealing how communities understand the world. Inside, the most captivating space is the ethnographic gallery, where masks, textiles, ceremonial objects and everyday tools highlight the creativity of cultures from Africa, Asia and Oceania. Each piece is displayed with context, showing how form and function intertwine in traditional craftsmanship. The rituals and beliefs room presents objects used in rites of passage, healing ceremonies and ancestral worship, offering insight into symbolic systems that shape community life. A highlight is the travelers’ archive, filled with journals, photographs and early field notes that document encounters between European explorers and distant cultures. The museum also features a contemporary dialogue space, where modern artists reinterpret traditional motifs, showing how cultural exchange continues today.

The Museum of Cultures, known locally as MUSEC, is Lugano’s principal museum of non‑European art and ethnography. It is housed in the historic Villa Malpensata on the city’s lakefront, with entrances from Riva Antonio Caccia along the shore and from Via Giuseppe Mazzini through a garden gate, just a short walk from the centre and the main railway station. Villa Malpensata is a 19th‑century lakeside residence set in a small park with mature trees and views across Lake Lugano. From the museum, a brief stroll along the quay leads to the Parco Ciani, a large lakeside park with subtropical vegetation and walking paths. The old town of Lugano, with its narrow streets, shops, cafés and the cathedral of San Lorenzo, lies a few minutes uphill. Close by are the LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura complex, home to MASI and major concerts, and the funicular connecting to the hillside quarter of Città Alta. Boat trips from the nearby landing stage provide easy access to lakeside villages such as Gandria and Morcote, while local transport reaches Monte Brè and Monte San Salvatore for panoramic views. MUSEC thus combines world cultures with Lugano’s scenic lake and mountain environment, all within a compact, walkable urban setting.
