The ASTRA National Museum Complex in Sibiu is one of Europe’s largest open‑air museums, a vast cultural landscape dedicated to traditional Romanian life. Spread across the Dumbrava Forest, it covers over 90 hectares and features more than 400 historic buildings brought from villages across the country. It’s a place where architecture, craftsmanship, and rural traditions come alive in an immersive natural setting. Inside the museum grounds, visitors can explore watermills, windmills, wooden churches, workshops, and farmsteads arranged along lakes and forest paths. One of the most interesting facts is that many structures were relocated piece by piece, preserving original materials and construction techniques. The interiors are fully furnished, showing how shepherds, carpenters, potters, and fishermen lived and worked. A highlight is the collection of functional installations: grain mills still turning, blacksmith forges demonstrating traditional metalwork, and wine presses that reveal centuries‑old agricultural practices. Seasonal demonstrations—bread baking, weaving, woodworking—add a dynamic layer to the experience. The museum also includes indoor galleries with ethnographic exhibits, costumes, and tools that trace Romania’s regional diversity.

ASTRA National Museum Complex lies in Dumbrava Forest, about five kilometers south of central Sibiu on Strada Pădurea Dumbrava. Set across 96 hectares of woodland and meadows, it is Europe’s largest open-air ethnographic museum. More than 400 traditional buildings from all regions of Romania have been reassembled here: wooden churches, watermills, windmills, farmsteads, workshops, and inns connected by shaded walking paths around a large lake. The collection illustrates rural life, craftsmanship, and folk architecture from the 18th to early 20th centuries. In summer the museum hosts fairs, craft workshops, folk dance shows, and seasonal markets, with a restaurant and gift shop on site. Because it sits just outside the city, ASTRA pairs perfectly with Sibiu’s historic center. A short drive or bus ride north brings you to Piața Mare and Piața Mică, Sibiu’s grand main squares framed by baroque buildings, the Brukenthal National Museum, and the Council Tower. Nearby is the Lutheran Cathedral of Saint Mary, with its striking Gothic spire, and the Bridge of Lies, a cast-iron pedestrian bridge tied to local legend. Also in the complex are the ‘ASTRA’ Museum of Transylvanian Civilisation and the Franz Binder World Ethnography Museum, which holds Egyptian and Asian collections.
