Saint Mary Evangelical Cathedral

Saint Mary Evangelical Cathedral is Sibiu’s most striking Gothic landmark, rising above the Upper Town with its tall spire and intricate stonework. Built in the 14th century on the site of an earlier Romanesque church, it became the spiritual center of the Transylvanian Saxon community. Its tower, over 70 meters high, once served as a watchpoint for fires and approaching danger, making it both a religious and civic symbol. Inside, the cathedral reveals a solemn, spacious nave supported by massive pillars. One of the most interesting facts is the presence of the 1514 bronze baptismal font, a masterpiece crafted by Leonhardus, decorated with detailed reliefs that survived wars, fires, and political upheavals. The interior also houses a remarkable collection of medieval fresco fragments, rediscovered during restoration and offering glimpses into early religious art in Sibiu. A highlight is the tomb of Mihnea cel Rău, a Wallachian ruler assassinated near the church in 1510. His stone slab, carved with a sword and cross, adds a dramatic historical layer to the cathedral’s quiet atmosphere. The organ, one of the largest in Romania, fills the space with powerful sound during concerts, making visits especially memorable.
