Location

The Sibiu Steam Engines Museum is on Strada Dorobanților 22, directly opposite Sibiu’s main railway station and just south of the city center. Housed in the former CFR roundhouse and turntable, it opened in 1994 to save Romania’s historic rolling stock from scrap. The open-air collection includes 23 standard-gauge locomotives, 10 narrow-gauge engines, snowploughs, and steam cranes built between 1885 and 1959 in Romania, Germany, and the United States. Several locomotives still run and are used for special enthusiast trains. Because of its spot by the station, the museum is an easy add-on to a day in Sibiu’s old town, which lies about 10-15 minutes’ walk northwest. From the station, head straight to Piața Mare, the grand main square framed by the baroque Brukenthal Palace housing the Brukenthal National Museum, the Council Tower with panoramic views, and colorful townhouses. Nearby Piața Mică has the Bridge of Lies and leads to the Passage of Stairs down to the lower town. The Lutheran Cathedral of Saint Mary, the Orthodox Cathedral, and the History Museum in Altemberger House are all close. Other attractions within walking distance include the Museum of Pharmaceutical History, the Museum of Natural History near the old city walls, and the August von Spiess Museum of Hunting.
