Set in the elegant Baroc Palace on Piața Unirii, the Timișoara Art Museum is the city’s main home for visual arts. The building itself is an attraction: a 1754 Baroque palace with grand staircases, high ceilings, and ornate chandeliers that once served as the Old Prefecture. Founded in 2006, the museum presents Romanian and European paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts across several centuries, along with strong temporary exhibitions that often highlight contemporary creators. Because it sits right on Union Square, you step out into Timișoara’s most beautiful plaza. The square is ringed by pastel Baroque facades, outdoor terraces, and landmarks like the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral and the Catholic Dome. From here it’s a short walk to Liberty Square, Victory Square, and the soaring Metropolitan Orthodox Cathedral with its neo-Moldavian towers. The Bastionul Maria Theresia, part of the old fortress, hosts galleries and cafés, while the Romanian National Opera and National Theatre are nearby. The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday, with student tickets and lockers at reception. After browsing the collections, grab coffee under the arcades, visit the nearby Museum of the Communist Consumer, or stroll toward the Bega Canal.
