Moon Church

About

Moon Church is one of Oradea’s most distinctive landmarks, famous for its unique astronomical mechanism that tracks the phases of the moon. Installed in the 18th century by a local watchmaker, the device sits above the main entrance and moves a small sphere to show the moon’s waxing and waning. For decades, locals used it as a public lunar calendar. Inside, the church blends late Baroque and early Neoclassical styles. The main nave is bright and harmonious, framed by elegant columns and soft decorative stucco. The iconostasis stands out with its gilded carvings and expressive icons painted by Transylvanian artists. Several side altars preserve original 18th‑century artwork, including scenes of saints connected to Oradea’s religious history. A highlight is the church’s astronomical room, where visitors can see parts of the mechanism and learn how it was engineered. The interior also features a beautifully restored choir balcony, often used for small concerts thanks to its warm acoustics.
