Zion Neolog Synagogue is one of Oradea’s most striking architectural treasures, a 20th‑century landmark that reflects the city’s once‑vibrant Jewish community. Completed in 1926, it was designed in an eclectic style combining Neo‑Moorish curves, Art Deco geometry, and a monumental central dome. Its façade, with tall arched windows and decorative brickwork, makes it instantly recognizable along the Crișul Repede riverbank. Inside, the synagogue feels both intimate and grand. The main hall is bathed in soft natural light, highlighting the elegant balconies and original wooden seating. The bimah stands at the centre, framed by delicate ornamentation that survived decades of disuse. The ark, with its carved details and symbolic motifs, remains one of the building’s most beautiful features. A compelling aspect of the synagogue is its transformation into a cultural space. Today it hosts exhibitions, concerts, and memorial events that explore Jewish heritage and Oradea’s multicultural past. The Zion Neolog Synagogue stands on the banks of the Crișul Repede River in the center of Oradea, Bihor County, western Romania. Built in 1878 for the Neolog Jewish community, it is one of the largest synagogues in the country and a striking example of eclectic architecture with Moorish, Byzantine, and Romanesque elements. Its tall dome and twin towers make it a landmark on the riverfront. From the synagogue you have a beautiful view of the river promenade, lined with cafés and terraces.
