The Museum of Underwater Activities in Piran is one of Slovenia’s most distinctive niche museums, celebrating the adventurous world of diving, underwater exploration, and maritime rescue. Housed in a former Venetian building near the harbour, it offers an engaging look at how humans learned to work, navigate, and survive beneath the surface of the Adriatic. One of the most interesting facts is that Slovenia has one of the oldest organised diving traditions in the region, and many of the museum’s exhibits come directly from local pioneers. Inside, visitors can see early diving suits made of thick rubber and heavy metal helmets, complete with air hoses and pumps that once required entire teams to operate. The collection includes rare breathing apparatuses, underwater cameras, and tools used for ship repairs and archaeological work. A highlight is the display of Yugoslav military diving equipment, revealing how divers carried out rescue missions, inspections, and covert operations.

The Museum of Underwater Activities is located in Piran, Slovenia, in the old town near the waterfront. It is the only museum in Slovenia dedicated to the history of diving and underwater exploration. The collection showcases vintage diving suits, helmets, equipment, and tools used by professional and recreational divers, along with photographs, documents, and models that trace the development of underwater activities in the Adriatic. Its central position means many of Piran’s main attractions are within easy walking distance. Tartini Square, the town’s main oval plaza, is just a short stroll away and lined with Venetian-style buildings, cafés, and the Tartini House dedicated to the famous violinist. From the square, narrow alleys lead up to the Church of St. George, whose bell tower offers sweeping views over Piran, the Adriatic, and the Alps on clear days. The medieval town walls above the old town provide another viewpoint and a look at Piran’s past as a Venetian fortress. Along the waterfront you’ll find the Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum in Gabrielli Palace, restaurants with fresh seafood, and spots for swimming. The Sečovlje Salina Nature Park is also nearby, showing traditional salt production.
