Memorial Centre of the Homeland War Vukovar stands on the grounds of the former Yugoslav Army barracks, a place that witnessed some of the most intense fighting of 1991. Today, it serves as a powerful educational and commemorative space dedicated to understanding the siege of Vukovar and the wider conflict. One of the most striking facts is that the centre preserves original military equipment used during the battle, including tanks, armoured vehicles and artillery pieces arranged exactly where they once stood. The site also includes reconstructed defensive positions, giving visitors a sense of the scale and conditions of urban warfare. Inside the main building, exhibitions combine personal stories, photographs, documents and multimedia to explain the chronology of the siege. A highlight is the room dedicated to Vukovar defenders, where individual portraits and testimonies create an intimate connection to the people behind the history. The centre also presents the broader context of the war, showing how events in Vukovar shaped Croatia’s path to independence.

The center is located at Ulica Ive Tijardovića 60, 32000, Vukovar, Croatia. It sits in a spacious area on the western side of the city, slightly removed from the immediate riverfront but easily accessible from all main roads. Because Vukovar is highly compact, a very short drive or bike ride from the barracks brings you straight to the city's other incredible historical treasures. Heading east toward the Danube River allows you to visit the magnificent Eltz Castle, a grand eighteenth-century Baroque palace complex that houses the Vukovar Municipal Museum. Closer to the water, you can also explore the historic Franciscan Monastery and its museum, which sits on a ridge overlooking the Danube. To see the city's most iconic modern landmark, you can head slightly south to stand before the towering Vukovar Water Tower monument.
