Church of Saints Philip and James

Church of Saints Philip and James is one of Vukovar’s most recognisable landmarks, rising above the Danube with its elegant Baroque‑classicist façade. Built in the mid‑18th century, it became a symbol of endurance after suffering heavy damage during the 1991 siege. Its reconstruction restored not only the building but also its role as a spiritual anchor for the community. Inside, visitors can admire the richly decorated main altar dedicated to the patron saints, along with side altars featuring finely carved woodwork and vivid religious paintings. One of the most interesting facts is that the church’s organ, originally crafted by master builders from Slovenia, was painstakingly restored to its former sound after the war. The interior preserves fragments of original frescoes and liturgical objects rescued from the ruins, each carrying its own story of survival. The tall nave, illuminated by soft natural light, creates a serene atmosphere ideal for reflection. A small exhibition area often presents items related to the church’s history, including documents and photographs showing its transformation over centuries.
