Ovčara Memorial Center

Ovčara Memorial Center, located at the site of the 1991 massacre near Vukovar, is one of Croatia’s most solemn places of remembrance. The centre stands inside the former farm hangar where 200 wounded prisoners from Vukovar Hospital were taken before being executed. Its design is intentionally stark, preserving the original structure to maintain the authenticity of the location. Inside, the most striking feature is the circular hall lined with illuminated portraits of the victims. Each face is accompanied by personal details, creating a powerful, intimate encounter with the individuals behind the tragedy. The quiet, dim atmosphere encourages reflection rather than exhibition-style viewing. Another notable element is the central memorial installation: a ring of earth and stones symbolising the burial site at nearby Ovčara, where victims were found in a mass grave. The centre also displays personal belongings recovered during exhumations, offering a deeply human connection to the events. Visitors can see documentary materials, testimonies and a timeline explaining how the massacre unfolded. The simplicity of the space—bare walls, subdued lighting, minimal text—reinforces its purpose as a place of mourning and respect.
