Cathedral of Saints Cyril and Methodius

The Cathedral of Saints Cyril and Methodius is one of Burgas’s most striking Orthodox landmarks, blending late‑19th‑century architecture with the city’s strong cultural identity. Completed in 1907, it stands out with its elegant stone façade, tall bell tower, and harmonious proportions inspired by traditional Bulgarian church design. Dedicated to the creators of the Slavic alphabet, the cathedral symbolizes both faith and literacy—an unusual and meaningful combination. Inside, visitors are greeted by a richly carved wooden iconostasis, one of the cathedral’s most impressive features. Its icons, painted by renowned Bulgarian artists, depict saints, biblical scenes, and the two brothers holding the Glagolitic script. The interior is filled with warm light filtering through stained‑glass windows, creating a serene atmosphere that highlights the detailed frescoes covering the walls and dome.
