Aqueduct Bar is one of the most impressive engineering relics in Montenegro, a long stone structure that once supplied the Old Town of Bar with fresh water from a spring in Mount Rumija. Built in the 16th century during the Ottoman period, it stretches across the valley with a rhythm of arches that reveal both practical skill and architectural elegance. Even in ruins, it remains a striking reminder of how vital water systems were for fortified towns. Inside the site, visitors can walk along the base of the arches and see how the aqueduct was constructed from local stone, fitted without modern mortar. The most interesting detail is its scale: the system originally had more than twenty arches and carried water over several kilometres, feeding fountains, households, and public baths. A small interpretive area explains how the aqueduct functioned using gravity alone, guiding water through narrow channels carved with remarkable precision. Another highlight is the view from beneath the tallest arches, where the Old Town rises dramatically in the background. This perspective shows why the aqueduct was essential—without it, life inside the fortified city would have been impossible. Today, the structure stands quietly among olive groves, offering a blend of history and landscape that makes it one of Bar’s most atmospheric stops.

Location

Aqueduct of Bar is the only preserved Aqueduct in Montenegro and one of the most interesting things to see around Stari Bar. It is located just outside the walls of the Old Town of Bar, at Stari Bar, Bar, Montenegro, on the northern side of the fortress. You can see its stone arches as soon as you walk towards the entrance of Stari Bar, it is about a few minutes walk from the main gate. Built in the 16th century during the Ottoman period, it brought water from a spring on Mount Rumija down to the town. Because it stands right next to Stari Bar, you are in the middle of the historic area. The main sight is the Old Town of Bar itself, a huge fortified ruined town with churches, mosques, a fortress and museums inside. Right in front of it is the old bazaar street Staro Barska Carsija with souvenir shops and local restaurants like Konoba Akvadukt. A short drive down you have the new town of Bar with King Nikola's Palace and its park museum, and the small Kalafatska Radionica Bokovac museum. Not far from the Aqueduct is also the famous old Olive Tree of Mirovica, one of the oldest trees in Europe.
