Red Lighthouse in Bar is one of the town’s most recognizable coastal symbols, a bright landmark standing at the end of the main breakwater. Built in the early 20th century, it guided ships entering the port long before modern navigation systems arrived. Its vivid red colour was chosen to make it visible even during strong Adriatic storms, and over time it became a beloved visual marker for sailors returning home. Inside, the lighthouse is simple but atmospheric. A narrow metal staircase leads to the lantern room, where the original rotating mechanism once operated. Though no longer in use, the space still shows how the light was maintained—manual winding, glass cleaning, and constant monitoring during rough weather. The small interior also preserves metal fittings and structural details that reveal the lighthouse’s practical, utilitarian design. One of the most interesting aspects is its position. Standing at the very edge of the harbour, the lighthouse offers close views of fishing boats, cargo ships, and the daily rhythm of Bar’s waterfront. At sunset, the red tower glows warmly against the sea, creating one of the most photogenic scenes in the city.

Location

Red Lighthouse in Bar is one of the most photographed spots in town and a real symbol of the port. It is located at the end of the main breakwater in the Port of Bar, Bar, Montenegro, right on the waterfront near the marina. You cannot miss it because of its bright red color standing against the blue sea. It is a working lighthouse but also a favorite place for a walk and for sunset photos. Since it is on the coast, everything in central Bar is close by. Just behind it you have the long promenade and city beach, and a short walk brings you to King Nikola's Palace with its park and museum, one of the most elegant buildings in town. Very close is also the Kalafatska Radionica Bokovac, the small museum of traditional wooden boat building at Ulica Branka Calovica. A bit further inland you can visit Dom Kulture Vladimir Popovic Spanac, the main cultural center, and if you go a few kilometers up the hill you reach Stari Bar, the Old Town of Bar, with its fortress, the Bar Aqueduct, the Church of St. Veneranda and the old Omerbasic Mosque.
