Museum of Local History in Ulcinj is one of the most atmospheric cultural sites on Montenegro’s southern coast, housed inside the former Venetian palace in the Old Town. Its location alone is remarkable: perched above the sea, the building once served as the residence of Ulcinj’s governors, and its thick stone walls still carry traces of Venetian, Ottoman, and local craftsmanship. Inside, the museum offers a compact but rich journey through Ulcinj’s past. The most interesting section is the archaeological collection, which includes Illyrian pottery, Roman lamps, and fragments of medieval jewellery found around the Old Town. These objects reveal how Ulcinj evolved from an ancient settlement into a bustling Adriatic port. Another highlight is the pirate exhibit, dedicated to the period when Ulcinj was known as a haven for Mediterranean corsairs. Weapons, navigation tools, and archival notes illustrate how the town became famous for its seafaring captains and dramatic maritime stories. The ethnographic rooms recreate traditional Ulcinj interiors with carved wooden furniture, embroidered textiles, and household items that show everyday life before modernisation.

Museum of Local History in Ulcinj, also known simply as the Museum of Ulcinj, is a lovely small museum right inside the old walled town. It is located at Stari Grad, Kalaja, Ulcinj, Montenegro, inside the Ulcinj Old Town fortress on top of the hill overlooking the sea. The museum is set in a former church and mosque complex and shows archaeological finds, old costumes, paintings and objects that tell the story of Ulcinj through Illyrian, Venetian and Ottoman times. Because it is in the Old Town, you are surrounded by sights. Just outside the museum you have the old Ulcinj Fortress walls, the Balshaj's Tower, the old Slave Market square, and the small churches and mosques inside the fortress. Walking down from Kalaja you come to the Small Beach and the promenade with cafes and restaurants. Not far from the Old Town you have the famous Long Beach Velika Plaza, the Old Olive Grove Valdanos, and the Church-Mosque complex. It is a perfect stop while exploring the Old Town, you can see the museum and then just continue wandering the stone streets.
