Ulcinj Castle sits right in the Old Town of Ulcinj, Montenegro, perched on a rocky headland that juts out over the Adriatic. The whole fortified quarter is the castle itself, and the address is simply Old Town, 85360 Ulcinj. Once you’re inside the walls you can wander the narrow stone streets that have been lived in for over two thousand years. Right there you’ll find the Ulcinj Museum with its archaeological and ethnographic collections, partly housed in the old Church-Mosque. A short walk up takes you to the Balšić Tower, the highest point of the citadel, which now serves as a gallery and offers wide views over the sea. Nearby is the open space once called Slave Square, along with monuments to Cervantes and other figures from the town’s past. The Pirate Museum is also just steps away, set inside the Palata Venezia complex at the northern entrance. Below the walls the small city beach, Mala Plaža, curves along the shore, and the Sailors’ Mosque stands close by with its distinctive minaret. Everything is close enough that you can explore the museums, the towers, the squares and the old fortifications in an easy stroll without leaving the historic heart of Ulcinj.
