Marubi National Museum of Photography

Marubi National Museum of Photography is one of Albania’s most captivating cultural institutions, a place where the country’s visual memory has been preserved with extraordinary care. Founded on the legacy of the Marubi dynasty—three generations of photographers active from the 1850s to the 1950s—it holds more than 500,000 images documenting everyday life, political upheavals, traditional costumes, and the evolution of Shkodër as a cultural centre. Inside, the museum unfolds like a time capsule. You can see early glass plate negatives that reveal astonishing detail, portraits of highland families in full traditional dress, and rare images of major historical figures. One of the most interesting facts is that Kel Marubi, the second generation, trained many local photographers, effectively creating Albania’s first photography school. Their work forms a visual archive unmatched in the region. The galleries are arranged thematically, guiding you through studio portraits, urban scenes, and documentary photography. The original Marubi studio camera is displayed as a centrepiece, showing the craftsmanship behind early Albanian photography. Temporary exhibitions often highlight contemporary artists, creating a dialogue between past and present.
