Rozafa Castle is Shkodër’s defining landmark, a hilltop fortress wrapped in legend and overlooking the confluence of the Buna, Drin, and Kiri rivers. Its most famous story—the Rozafa legend—tells of a woman immured within the walls so the castle would stand, a tale that gives the site its haunting emotional depth. The current structure dates mainly to the Venetian and Ottoman periods, but archaeological traces show Illyrian fortifications long before them. Inside, the castle unfolds as a network of stone courtyards, defensive towers, and panoramic viewpoints. One highlight is the Venetian courtyard, where you can see remnants of palaces and military quarters. The small museum on site presents Illyrian artifacts, medieval weapons, and models illustrating how the fortress evolved across centuries. The St. Stephen’s Church, later converted into a mosque, reveals layers of religious history through its mixed architectural features.
Shkodër Albania
Rozafa Castle stands on a rocky hill at the southern edge of Shkodër, Albania, along Rruga Rozafa. It’s about a short drive or a pleasant uphill walk from the city centre, right where the Buna and Drin rivers meet. The old fortress walls offer wide views over Lake Shkodra, the surrounding plains and the distant mountains. Inside the grounds you’ll find ruins, a small museum and the quiet courtyards that make the place feel atmospheric. Just below the hill sits the Lead Mosque, an elegant Ottoman building that’s easy to visit on the same outing. From the castle it’s a quick trip back into town to reach the Marubi National Museum of Photography, the Shkodër History Museum, the Site of Witness and Memory, and the pedestrian streets around Rruga Kolë Idromeno. The Ebu Bekr Mosque and St Stephen’s Cathedral are also close enough to include if you’re exploring the city’s main cultural spots in one relaxed day.
